What is VA-Provided Home Care ?

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers several programs that can make it possible for veterans to get in-home support. These programs can include help with daily activities, skilled nursing, therapy and even temporary respite  for family caregivers.

Here are some common benefits:

Home Health Aide Care:

This program provides trained aides who can assist with:

  • Bathing and grooming

  • Dressing

  • Light meal preparation

  • Light housekeeping

  • Laundry

  • Medication reminders

  • Grocery shopping and errands

  • Mobility support and fall prevention

  • Alzheimer's and Dementia

These services are especially helpful for veterans who have chronic illnesses, disabilities, or need extra support  to remain independent.

Respite Care:

Family caregivers deserve breaks too, and through the {Name the program} from the VA, then can.. Respite care provides short-term assistance so caregivers can rest, run errands, or simply recharge knowing their loved one is safe and cared for.

How are services paid for ?

One of the biggest questions families have is : “How much will this cost?” The answer may be a pleasant surprise. For eligible veterans, Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care and Respite Care services are covered in full by the VA. That means there is no out of pocket cost for the veteran or their family for the hours of care approved by the VA.

How it works

  • The VA authorizes services based on a needs assessment done by your VA care team

  • A VA- approved the home care agency is assigned to provide the care

  • The VA pays the agency directly so the veteran receives the service at no charge for the approved hours

For programs like Aid and Attendance or Housebound Benefits, the VA provides monthly pension payments directly to the veteran , which can be used to pay for home care services.

How to get started

  1. Confirm VA Eligibility - Veterans must be enrolled in VA Health Care

  2. Contact a VA Social Worker or Case Manager - They can explain available benefits and make referrals

  3. Gather Required Paperwork - This may include medical records, proof of service, and VA forms like the Aid and Attendance application

Why This Matters:

VA home care benefits can help veterans maintain dignity, safety, and independence while easing the burden on their families. For many, it’s the support that allows them to age in place
