More and more people are stepping into the role of primary caregivers for their aging parents. In fact, approximately 23% of US adults are part of the sandwich generation; which is defined as the group of people caring for both growing children and adult parents. AARP estimates that U.S. businesses lose an estimated $33.6 billion annually due to lost productivity from full-time working caregivers.

With the increase in caregiving demands, employers who present a strategy and support for their employees are likely to stand out. Eldercare is challenging for several reasons

  1. Aging people often require additional support for complex medical and personal issues

  2. Our population is rapidly aging and this issue is placing a lot of burden on families

  3. We do not have adequate infrastructure whether it be physically , socially, or digital to meet the growing and changing needs of our elderly, putting more strain on families to make up for the shortcomings.

How can employers provide more support?

A recent Harvard Business Review article makes a compelling case for employers to implement an eldercare policy due to the impact caregiving is having on workplaces. With a growing number of employees taking on the role of caregiving for their aging parent(s) , companies now more than ever need to create sustainable solutions to meet workforce challenges.

Here are 4 ways employers can support caregivers at work

  1. Offer flexible hours so that workers are able to take parents and loved ones to and from appointments.

  2. Offer Caregiver Leave Policies - which will make it possible for people to take leave for appointments, surgeries, caretalking without fear of penalty.

  3. Create resources and groups where caregivers can share experiences, resources and insight with one another additionally bringing in professionals like us to help your employees navigate.

  4. Bring in the experts : Senior care is complex and usually requires hours of research , frustrating phone calls and stress , before finding the right doctor, insurance, home care company, supplies etc. Having monthly or quarterly lunch and learning with experts is a great demonstration of your commitment to your employees lives outside of work and their overall well-being.

As our population continues to age, the employers who are investing in creating a caregiving support ecosystem are the ones who’ll stand out. Their talent will feel more supported, less burned and more productive.
