Falls are not a normal part of aging and there are steps you can take to prevent or reduce the chances of falling.

  1. Speak to your doctor and medical team

Have your feet and vision checked annually , inform your doctor of any medication that might be making you feel dizzy, or if you have recently fallen, inform your doctor as well.

  2. Home modifications

    1. Reduce clutter in the home to ensure nothing falls over and clear all walk ways. At Wellcare our aid is able to support this. We ensure the home is a safe place for our members to navigate worry free.

    2. Wear comfortable shoes when in public and if possible walk outside when there are people around or walk with a friend , family member, caregiver, or neighbor

    3. And handle bars in your bathroom and along the walls of your home

    4. Lighting - make sure all bulbs are work and if you are able to install nightlights or lights along your hallway for visibility

    5. Stop drinking water 2-3 hours before bed and use the bathroom before sleeping to reduce the likelihood of having to get out of bed in the middle of the night

    6. When waking up gently get up and give yourself a few seconds to come to after hours of sleep

    7. Consider getting a shower chair and a non slip bathroom mat for your bathing needs

    8. Remove any rugs that are sliding

If you or your loved ones need support with bathing, grooming, running errands and supervision when walking, having a home health aide present a few times a week can support you in age independently at home.
